Switzerland has officially returned a funerary mask, dating back over 2,000 years, to Egypt, following its interception by Swiss customs four years ago. The announcement was made by the Swiss Embassy in Cairo on Wednesday, highlighting the significance of this cultural repatriation.

The ancient artifact, identified as a golden mummy mask from Egypt's Ptolemaic period, was seized by Swiss customs authorities in 2022. After its seizure, the mask underwent a thorough examination and was authenticated as an Egyptian artifact. The return of the mask was marked by a formal handover ceremony in Bern, where Swiss Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider presented the item to Egypt's ambassador to Switzerland, Mohamed Negm.

The Swiss Embassy emphasized that this return represents a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Switzerland and Egypt aimed at protecting cultural heritage and combating the illicit trafficking of cultural property. Since 2011, Switzerland has returned approximately 80 cultural objects to Egypt, underscoring its commitment to addressing the challenges of cultural heritage preservation.

This repatriation aligns with Egypt's broader efforts to recover antiquities that have been illegally taken abroad. In a related development, the Egyptian Embassy in Beirut recently received 74 archaeological artifacts from Lebanese authorities, which are set to be repatriated to Egypt. This handover is part of a collaborative initiative between Egypt and Lebanon focused on safeguarding cultural heritage and tackling the illicit trade of antiquities.

Egypt has been proactive in its repatriation efforts, successfully retrieving artifacts from various countries, including the United States. Earlier this year, 13 artifacts that had been illegally smuggled out of Egypt were returned following cooperation with New York authorities. Among these items were a 7th-century BC alabaster jar for oils and perfumes, as well as animal-shaped cosmetic containers from the Middle and New Kingdoms of Ancient Egypt.

In 2022, Egyptian officials also reported the return of 13 artifacts from the United Kingdom and Germany, which included significant items such as a mummy's skull and hand, ankh and baboon-shaped amulets, a bronze Osiris crown, and a beaded funerary mask.

The return of the golden mask from Switzerland marks another step in Egypt's ongoing efforts to reclaim its cultural heritage and highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing the challenges of antiquities trafficking.
