A Sydney woman, Leah Stewart, has shown signs of recovery after waking briefly from an induced coma more than a week after she was severely injured in a shark attack. The incident occurred on Saturday, June 13, at Coogee Beach, a popular swimming spot in Sydney.
Stewart, 34, was swimming close to the shore when she was bitten multiple times on her arms and legs, resulting in significant blood loss. Following the attack, she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where she underwent several surgeries, including the amputation of her arm.
On Tuesday, her brother, Joshua Stewart, reported that medical staff had reduced her sedation, allowing her to regain consciousness momentarily. During this brief awakening, Leah expressed her love to her mother and partner, who were present at her bedside, and inquired about the well-being of her daughter. Joshua described the moment as a "miracle," noting that it exceeded the family's expectations and provided a glimmer of hope amid a challenging situation.
Despite this positive development, Leah Stewart remains in intensive care and continues to face a long recovery process. Joshua mentioned that she had undergone five surgeries within the past week, with additional procedures planned for the coming weeks. He emphasized the importance of this initial step towards recovery, stating, "Leah has a long road ahead and still remains in critical care, but this is such a positive first step and gives us hope for Leah's long-term recovery."
Leah Stewart is a teacher and had gone to Coogee Beach for a swim that fateful Saturday morning. Her case is part of a concerning trend, as Australia has experienced a series of shark attacks this year. Earlier in January, there were four attacks reported in just two days, including a tragic incident involving a young boy who succumbed to injuries sustained from a shark bite at a Sydney beach.
In addition to the January incidents, last month saw two fatal shark attacks in Australia. One involved a man who was spearfishing in Queensland, while another incident in Western Australia claimed the life of 38-year-old Steven Mattaboni, who was attacked by a 4-meter (13-foot) shark.
