Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has passed away at the age of 80 while receiving treatment for a heart condition in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. The government confirmed his death, which occurred at approximately 8 AM local time on Monday at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital.
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi expressed his condolences to President Hassan, the grieving family, and the people of Tanzania, acknowledging the profound loss felt by the nation. Following Islamic traditions, Ameir was laid to rest later that day in Kizimkazi, South Unguja. The funeral was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba and Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi, as well as various religious leaders.
In the wake of his passing, President Hassan received messages of condolence from several African leaders. Hafidh Ameir Hassan was born in Zanzibar in 1946 and married Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978. While he largely stayed out of the political limelight, he was a supportive presence throughout her career, which included her rise to the presidency following the death of former President John Magufuli in 2021. The couple had four children, one of whom, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, serves as a member of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.
Ameir had a background in education and agriculture. After studying agricultural machinery engineering in the United Kingdom, he worked for Zanzibar’s Agriculture Ministry until his retirement in 2005. He later took on a teaching role at Kizimbani Agricultural College, where he shared his expertise with future generations.
