**Thailand Targets 2030 Completion of First Phase of High-Speed Rail Link to China**
Thailand has announced its ambitious plan to complete the first phase of a high-speed rail link connecting the country to China by the year 2030. This announcement comes as Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul concluded a five-day visit to China, where discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including infrastructure and trade.
The planned high-speed rail line will span approximately 250 kilometers (155 miles) and will initially connect Thailand's capital, Bangkok, to Nakhon Ratchasima. This project is part of a broader initiative aligned with China's vision for a vast 3,900-kilometer rail network that aims to link the southwestern Chinese city of Kunming to destinations as far south as Singapore.
In addition to the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima line, Thailand is preparing to commence construction on a second high-speed rail line that will extend from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai. This line is significant as it will connect with Laos, which already has a high-speed rail line leading to Kunming in southern China, thereby enhancing regional connectivity.
The Thai government has also indicated progress on a separate project that involves constructing a conventional rail link that will connect Thailand with Laos to the north and Malaysia to the south. This initiative is part of Thailand's broader strategy to enhance its transportation infrastructure and facilitate trade across Southeast Asia.
During Prime Minister Anutin's visit, discussions also included trade relations, with Thailand urging China, its second-largest export market, to increase imports of Thai fruits and processed food products. This move is expected to bolster Thailand's agricultural sector and enhance its export capabilities.
Furthermore, the two nations agreed to establish a foreign affairs and defense mechanism aimed at strengthening cooperation in defense industries and personnel development. This partnership will also involve sharing intelligence and transaction data to combat online scams and financial fraud, a growing concern in the region. Thailand has been actively participating in regional efforts to dismantle extensive scam centers that have emerged in Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Myanmar and Cambodia.
The high-speed rail project is seen as a pivotal development in Thailand's infrastructure landscape, promising to not only improve domestic transportation but also enhance regional connectivity and economic collaboration with neighboring countries.
