Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has expressed unwavering support for George Russell, emphasizing the British driver's potential to reclaim his status as a contender for the Formula One championship. This reassurance comes after Russell has faced a challenging season, significantly overshadowed by his younger teammate, Kimi Antonelli.
Russell, 28, began the current season with high expectations and was considered a favorite for the title. However, he has only secured two victories in the first 14 races, while Antonelli, just 20 years old, has dominated the competition with eight wins. Following the recent Spanish Grand Prix held at Madrid's new circuit, Russell finished in fifth place, while Antonelli celebrated yet another victory, extending his lead in the championship standings to a substantial 81 points.

"When it comes to George, you can have good races, bad races. Good years and bad years. "If you have a run like him this year you’re taking a beating, but the great ones, they recover, and I think that George has all he needs to fight for championships," Wolff remarked. The way this kid is able to compartmentalize, and be a young kid and then get into the car and be the mature racing driver, if he says to himself ‘I’m not thinking about the championship’, he’s not thinking about the championship," he added.
