Music Nicosia, Axiotheas Mansion, 8.30pm. Antonis Mitzelos promises an evening of beloved songs, memories and timeless melodies as part of the 29th Cultural Festival of the University of Cyprus. The concert, titled Stou feggariou kàpia gonia, will also feature singer Katerina Paraschou, pianist Kyriacos Costa and violinist Christodoulos Christodoulou. A lesser-known but particularly significant aspect of Cypriot participation in the Second World War is brought to light in the new book by Kyriacos Charalambides, Sergeant Costas Charalambides in the Second World War. The LEA Festival comes to Cyprus on June 22 and 23, with two events in Nicosia featuring two of the most significant voices in contemporary Spanish-language literature: Guatemalan writer Rodrigo Rey Rosa and Spanish novelist Alejandro Palomas. At Kafeneion, Rodrigo Rey Rosa will be in conversation with journalist and historian Lena Matsiori about his writing journey. Nicosia, Soloneion Book Centre, Tuesday June 24, 7pm. Screening Nicosia, Pantheon, 8.30pm. The Film Friends Club is screening A Poet, directed by Simon Mesa Soto. Óscar Restrepo’s obsession with poetry has brought him no fame. Now older and eccentric, he has succumbed to the cliché of the poet who lives in obscurity. His encounter with Yurlady, a teenager from a poor family, and the help he offers her in developing her talent, brings a little light to his days — though drawing her into the world of poets may not be a good idea. Taking its starting point from the summer solstice and the symbolic moment of the longest day of the year, Thanasis Drakopoulos presents the theatrical monologue Between Two Suns, a performance that moves between memory and absence, between personal experience and universal human themes.
