Directed and curated by Antigoni Gyra, actors Aliki Avdelopoulou and Dimitris Agoras follow the rhythm of Solomos’s language with their whole bodies, singing and switching roles to turn the staged reading into a physical, spoken narrative. Nicosia’s Dendro Theatre stages Lena Kitsopoulou’s “Harmful Effects of Smoking” at 8.30pm, directed by Kostas Silvestrou. The play centres on a seemingly light-hearted television talk show, where an inventor presents his new “innovative” idea. The cast includes Alexandros Parisis, Eleni Sidera, Panos Makris, Katerina Loura and Michalis Kazakas, with Niovi Charalambous and Lena Kitsopoulou appearing on screen. Music The Elana Sasson Quartet, an international ensemble exploring common ground between different cultural memories and identities through music, performs at Nicosia’s Axiothea Mansion at 8.30pm as part of the University of Cyprus’s 29th Cultural Festival. Drawing on Persian poetry and traditional songs from the Kurdish mountains, the quartet presents “In Between,” blending modal melodies, asymmetric rhythms and Eastern Mediterranean musical elements with contemporary jazz improvisation. Against the backdrop of Nicosia’s Venetian walls, Vakia Stavrou performs an evening of song at the Field Club (Tennis Club) at 8.30pm, accompanied on piano by her regular collaborator Manolis Neophytou. The concert will range across favourite melodies from around the world alongside songs from Stavrou’s own repertoire. Part of the net proceeds will go to a charitable cause, to be announced on the night. Visual Arts The Leventis Gallery opens the charity exhibition “Resilience: Art and Mental Health” at 7pm, co-organised with the Cyprus Mental Health Association (Nicosia) and the Mental Health Services Directorate of the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY). The exhibition brings together works created by members of Occupational Rehabilitation Units (MERA) in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. Runs until September 20. Limassol’s XeniArtSpace Gallery, at Trilogy Plaza, presents the group exhibition “Channelled: Women in Art Across Centuries,” featuring works by 17 internationally recognised women artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, putting historically significant figures in dialogue with established and emerging voices in contemporary visual art. Archaeologist and art historian Anna Marangou and Athanasios Vionis, associate professor of Byzantine and post-Byzantine archaeology and art at the University of Cyprus and former director of the Archaeological Research Unit (2020–2024), will share their thoughts on the publication.
