**Time to Move Forward with Aphrodite Gas Field, President Tells Chevron**
President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized the urgency of transitioning from planning to implementation regarding the development of the Aphrodite gas field during a meeting with Chevron’s Base Assets and Emerging Countries chairman, Javier la Rosa, on Tuesday. The president described the project as a “strategic priority” for Cyprus, highlighting the significant progress that has already been achieved.
According to government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the meeting underscored a mutual commitment to advancing the development of the Aphrodite gas field, which is based on an approved development and production plan. Christodoulides and la Rosa engaged in discussions concerning the ongoing technical and commercial works associated with the project, as well as the necessary steps toward reaching a final investment decision.
Letymbiotis reported that the president stressed the importance of maintaining momentum and accelerating the timeline for making a final investment decision, with the goal of commencing natural gas production as soon as possible. The discussions also touched upon the strategic significance of energy cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt, particularly in relation to utilizing the natural gas from the Aphrodite field through existing Egyptian infrastructure.
This collaboration is expected to create substantial opportunities for the commercial exploitation of gas deposits within Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone, while also enhancing regional energy planning and interconnectivity in the eastern Mediterranean. Letymbiotis noted that the successful development of the Aphrodite gas field would mark a significant milestone for Cyprus, reinforcing the eastern Mediterranean's role in European energy planning and security.
Christodoulides reiterated Cyprus’ readiness to work closely with Chevron and all relevant partners to facilitate the next steps in the project’s implementation, aiming to maintain the current momentum.
