**Traffic Changes Around Nicosia’s Walled City Starting Monday**
Nicosia, Cyprus – Significant changes to traffic arrangements around Nicosia’s historic walled city will take effect on Monday, as construction on Konstantinos Palaiologos Avenue progresses to a new phase, according to an announcement from the municipality on Wednesday.
The alterations are part of the ongoing “Regeneration of the Inner Perimeter Arch of the Moat, Phase A” project. Notably, construction section A2 will reopen to traffic, which serves as the exit lane from Thermopylon Street leading towards the Oxi roundabout. This reopening is expected to improve traffic flow for motorists departing the walled city, providing a more direct route to Stasinou Avenue and Eleftheria Square via the Oxi roundabout.
While section A2 will be accessible, other traffic arrangements will remain unchanged as the construction project continues, with an anticipated completion date set for early 2027. Specifically, construction section A3, which extends from the Oxi roundabout to the entrance of the municipal car park at Promachonas Kostantza, will remain closed until mid-December.
Additionally, the western section of Xanthi Xenierou Street will continue to function as a cul-de-sac, allowing two-way traffic only for local residents coming from Areos Street. Section A4, which encompasses the eastern part of Konstantinos Palaiologos Avenue, will also remain closed between its junction with Archbishop Makarios II Square and the municipal car park at Promachonas Kostantza. Access to this area will be restricted to local residents and emergency vehicles.
The ongoing construction works include excavation for the underground installation of utilities, as well as the reconstruction of roads and pavements. The municipality has also indicated that façade improvements to private buildings are being carried out in other sections of the project.
Motorists are advised to take alternative routes while navigating the area. Those traveling from east to west towards the pedestrianised zone are encouraged to use Stasinou Avenue, the Doros Loizos Bridge (formerly known as Kanningos), and Konstantinos Palaiologos Street, proceeding from the Oxi roundabout towards Eleftheria Square.
For drivers exiting the walled city towards Stasinou and Salaminos Avenues, the recommended route includes Lefkonos, Diogenous, Piraeus, Patriarch Gregorios, and Agios Antonios Streets. Vehicles heading towards the Doros Loizos Bridge and Eleftheria Square should follow Lefkonos, Aeschylus, Hippocrates, Thermopylae, and the Oxi roundabout.
The municipality has also reminded motorists that vehicles longer than seven meters, including lorries, are prohibited from entering the walled city. Drivers are urged to adhere to road signs and remain cautious as construction progresses.
As the project continues, the municipality aims to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of the area, contributing to the overall regeneration of Nicosia’s historic center.
