The parents say that instead of looking at ways to upgrade the school, which operates entirely out of prefab classrooms, authorities are pushing ahead with further cuts to its services. Organised parents and other community figures have decided to hold the protest outside the school, while the possible closure of the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road at the Tremithousa-Mesogi traffic lights is also being considered. Unrest in the community, on the northern outskirts of Paphos municipality, began in recent days after the Education Ministry informed parents, according to their account, that one of the school’s six prefab classrooms would be removed to meet urgent needs at another school. Parents say they were told in response to their protest that modifications would instead be made to one of the other prefab classrooms to accommodate a larger number of students. Chrysanthos Savvides, chair of parliament’s Education Committee, told Phileleftheros he had received angry reactions over the past three days from parents and other community figures in Tremithousa over the plan. He described the complaints and reactions as entirely justified, noting that Tremithousa Primary School already holds the unfortunate distinction of having only prefab classrooms, and that removing one of them amounts to further downgrading. He said the situation could not be tolerated and called on the authorities to rethink their decisions in a rational way.
