**Truck Crash in Egypt Claims 18 Lives, Many Victims Identified as Child Labourers**
ISMAILIA, Egypt — A tragic road accident in Egypt has resulted in the deaths of at least 18 individuals, many of whom were children engaged in agricultural labor. The incident occurred on Tuesday on a link road in the Al-Dawawis area of Ismailia governorate, as reported by local news sources.
According to Egypt's Ministry of Health, the crash involved a pick-up truck transporting agricultural workers. The accident left 47 individuals injured, with approximately 30 requiring medical attention. Victims were swiftly transported to Al-Qassasin Specialized Hospital in the nearby town of El-Kassasin, where the severity of the injuries was assessed. Medical personnel indicated that the majority of the deceased were children aged 13 and 14, with the youngest victim being just 10 years old.
The workers involved in the accident primarily hailed from two villages in the Sharqiya governorate and were employed on a farm in Ismailia. This incident sheds light on the broader issue of child labor in Egypt, where official statistics reveal that around 1.3 million minors are engaged in various forms of work, often under hazardous conditions.
In response to the tragedy, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The Ministry of Social Solidarity and the Ministry of Labour announced that they would provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased as well as support for those who were injured in the accident.
The use of pick-up trucks for transportation to work is common among Egypt's informal labor sector, highlighting the precarious nature of employment for many workers. The country has seen a concerning rise in road fatalities and injuries, with a reported increase of over 10 percent in such incidents, according to data from Egypt’s state statistics agency. Alarmingly, children under the age of 15 have been identified as the demographic most affected by road accidents.
As the investigation unfolds, the incident raises urgent questions about road safety, the prevalence of child labor, and the measures needed to protect vulnerable populations in Egypt.
