**Turkish Police Conduct Nationwide Raids Targeting LGBTQ+ Community**
On Saturday, Turkish police executed a series of coordinated raids across 15 provinces, focusing on the homes and gathering spots of LGBTQ+ activists. This operation was part of a broader initiative linked to the government's agenda of protecting what it describes as the traditional family structure. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that legal actions have been initiated against 162 individuals, nine associations, and 13 companies as part of these operations, which he referred to on social media platform X as “My Family is Safe.”
The operations, which involved both police and gendarmerie forces, took place in several major cities, including Istanbul and Ankara. Although Gurlek did not disclose the exact number of arrests made, he emphasized that these actions align with the “Decade of the Family” policy declared by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This policy aims to safeguard “our children, the institution of the family, and the social order,” reflecting the government's stance on family values.
In Istanbul, authorities targeted a gay bar and a nightclub recognized as safe havens for the LGBTQ+ community. Footage released by pro-government media captured scenes from these raids, which also included a men’s hammam. The LGBTQ+ rights organization Kaos GL reported that more than ten of its members were arrested during the police searches of their homes. Additionally, officers conducted searches at the association’s offices, indicating a significant crackdown on LGBTQ+ advocacy in the country.
Kaos GL stated that the police actions were primarily based on charges of “insulting public decency.” The organization also noted that its account on X, along with those of approximately fifteen other LGBTQ+ groups and activists, had been blocked by Turkish authorities just a day prior to the raids. This move has raised concerns about the increasing suppression of LGBTQ+ voices in Turkey.
While homosexuality is not criminalized under Turkish law, there remains a pervasive hostility towards LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly at high levels of government. President Erdogan has previously labeled LGBTQ+ people as “perverted” and has accused the community of contributing to the nation’s declining birth rate, further entrenching societal stigma against sexual and gender minorities.
In response to the raids and the broader climate of repression, Istanbul MP Ozgul Sakı, representing the left-wing pro-Kurdish DEM party, voiced her opposition on X. She stated, “existence cannot be banned or prevented,” asserting that “LGBTQ+ rights are human rights.” This statement reflects a growing resistance among some political figures and activists against the government's actions and rhetoric.
