**Turtles Fitted with Satellite Trackers in Cyprus**
In a groundbreaking initiative, two sea turtles nesting in Cyprus are now being tracked by satellite, marking the first time such technology has been used for this purpose in the region. The Mediterranean Turtle Research and Conservation Society (MedTRACS) announced this development on Wednesday, revealing that satellite transmitters were fitted in June to a female green turtle and a female loggerhead turtle at Lara Bay, a significant breeding site for both species in the Levant.
This project is a collaborative effort with the Sea Turtle Conservancy, aimed at enhancing understanding of the migration patterns of sea turtles in Cyprus. The initiative is expected to yield valuable data regarding the turtles' migration routes, feeding grounds, habitat use, and the various threats they encounter during their journeys across the Mediterranean.
The turtles have been given the names Andrea and Lara. Andrea is named in honor of Andreas Dimitropoulos, the founder of Cyprus’ Sea Turtle Conservation Programme in 1978. MedTRACS highlighted Dimitropoulos’s pioneering work, which has been instrumental in laying the groundwork for sea turtle conservation efforts in Cyprus and the surrounding region. Lara, on the other hand, is named after Lara Beach, which is described as “the heart of the programme” and is recognized as one of the Mediterranean’s most crucial nesting beaches for both green and loggerhead turtles.
The satellite tracking initiative represents a significant advancement in conservation efforts, as it allows researchers and the public to monitor the movements of these turtles in real time. Members of the public can access online tracking maps to follow the journeys of Andrea and Lara as they traverse the Mediterranean, providing a unique opportunity to engage with and learn about these remarkable marine creatures.
