**Two Arrested in Connection with Boxing Star Zolani Tete's Murder**
Police in South Africa's Eastern Cape have arrested two men in relation to the murder of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete, who was shot and killed in Mdantsane on Friday evening. The arrests were made on Saturday in Ku Gompo, following a rapid, intelligence-led operation involving various law enforcement agencies.
The suspects, aged 30 and 22, are currently in custody and are being interrogated regarding Tete's murder and the attempted murder of a 27-year-old woman who was injured during the incident. Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed the arrests and indicated that the investigation is ongoing.
"Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, the SAPS is unable to disclose further details regarding the motive or the circumstances surrounding the arrests at this time," Gantana stated. She added that investigators are pursuing multiple leads and anticipate further arrests in the case.
Zolani Tete, 38, was shot outside his home in Mdantsane while waiting in his car for the gate to open around 6:30 PM. Reports indicate that two armed assailants, wearing balaclavas, exited another vehicle and opened fire on Tete and the woman accompanying him. In an effort to evade the gunfire, Tete drove his vehicle into the yard but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a nearby hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment. Following the incident, police confirmed Tete's identity after notifying his next of kin.
Tete was a prominent figure in South African boxing, having won world titles in two different weight classes. He also holds a Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a world title fight, having defeated Siboniso Gonya in just 11 seconds on November 18, 2017, at the SSE Arena in Belfast. Tete claimed the International Boxing Federation junior bantamweight title in July 2014 and later held the World Boxing Organisation bantamweight title from 2017 until his loss to John Riel Casimero in November 2019.
Over the course of his professional career, Tete fought 34 times, achieving 29 victories, with 22 of those wins coming by way of knockout. He began boxing at the age of eight in Mdantsane and was trained by former world champion Vuyani Bungu.
Tete had not participated in a fight since July 2022, when he tested positive for the banned substance stanozolol following a victory over Jason Cunningham at Wembley. The result of that match was overturned to a no contest, and Tete received a four-year ban, which concluded on July 29, 2023. He has consistently maintained that he never knowingly ingested the banned substance. In a January interview with boxing magazine The Ring, Tete expressed his intention to return to the ring this year.
