In a significant escalation of hostilities, two civilians have lost their lives and several others have been injured following a wave of drone attacks attributed to Ukraine in Russia's Saratov region. Local Governor Roman Busargin reported the incidents via a post on Telegram on Sunday, detailing the impact of the attacks on both Saratov and the nearby city of Engels.
The drone strikes resulted in debris crashing into a multi-story apartment building in Engels, leading to the fatalities. In addition to the two deceased, multiple injuries were reported in Saratov, where drone strikes also caused damage to civilian infrastructure. Governor Busargin assured the public that affected families would receive necessary assistance, including temporary housing while engineers assess the damage to their properties.
The Russian Defense Ministry indicated that its air defense systems were active during the attacks, claiming to have intercepted and destroyed a total of 635 Ukrainian drones across 16 regions, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Rostov, and Saratov, as well as in Crimea and the Moscow Region. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that six drones were intercepted in the early hours of Sunday as they approached the capital.
In the Republic of Bashkortostan, Radiy Khabirov reported that 25 drones were downed, with some debris igniting a fire in an industrial zone in Ufa. Additionally, the Samara Region experienced damage to a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, which has often been compared to Amazon. The company confirmed the damage and stated that it had adjusted its logistics operations to reroute incoming shipments and outgoing orders to other facilities.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified its drone strikes deep into Russian territory, frequently targeting Wildberries hubs, civilian infrastructure, and residential areas. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the attacks on the warehouses, asserting that they were intentional and aimed at facilities storing sanctioned components for drone production and navigation equipment. However, Moscow has dismissed these claims, insisting that Wildberries does not supply the military.
In response to the drone attacks, Russia has conducted retaliatory strikes targeting Ukraine’s defense-related facilities, including sites for drone and missile production as well as fuel depots. The Russian government maintains that its military operations do not intentionally target civilians.
