Two users of personal mobility devices apparently lost control of their scooters on Friday while travelling along a promenade in the tourist area of Kato Paphos, leaving the walkway and ending up on rocks by the sea. The incident put both riders at immediate risk, as well as dozens of tourists who were walking in the area at the time. Many visitors witnessed the accident and several rushed to help. They climbed down into the water and onto the rocks below the promenade and helped the two scooter riders back onto the walkway. The riders escaped with only minor injuries and grazes. Following similar dangerous incidents that have occurred frequently in Paphos during this period, acting mayor Angelos Onisiforou returned to the issue on Saturday, stressing in a written statement that the safety of residents and visitors is non-negotiable. He said Paphos municipality, working closely with Paphos traffic police, is continuing efforts to tackle the uncontrolled use of personal mobility devices and other wheeled vehicles on promenades and in public spaces. Onisiforou also thanked Paphos traffic police for what he described as their excellent organisation, coordination and enforcement efforts in addressing the problem. The initiative is not only about enforcing the law but, above all, about protecting pedestrians, he said. Every resident, elderly person, parent with a child and visitor walking along a promenade should feel safe, Onisiforou said, stressing that pedestrian areas are intended for pedestrians. “No one should have to walk in fear that an electric scooter or another device will pass them at high speed and could knock them down or injure them,” he said.
