**Two Face Larnaca Court Over Kornos Forest Fire Started by Fireworks**
Larnaca, Cyprus – A man and a woman, aged 26 and 28, are set to face trial at the Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court on October 21, following their involvement in a forest fire incident near Kornos. The fire, which broke out after the pair allegedly set off fireworks, has led to serious charges including conspiracy to commit a felony, arson in a forest, attempted arson, and negligent and reckless acts.
The incident occurred on August 2, when the two individuals were reportedly seen igniting fireworks just a few meters from a kiosk in Kornos. According to police investigations conducted by the Kofinou police station, the pair had purchased the fireworks from a local kiosk. Witnesses reported that they lit three fireworks, which subsequently ignited nearby grass in a forested area.
A local couple played a crucial role in preventing the fire from spreading further. They noticed the individuals lighting the fireworks around 7 PM and, concerned about the potential danger, confronted them. Upon realizing the gravity of the situation, the couple exited their vehicle and intervened. After the confrontation, the two accused fled the scene in a car. The couple managed to extinguish the fire and took photographs of the vehicle, which later assisted law enforcement in identifying and apprehending the suspects.
Following their arrest, the prosecution requested that the two be remanded in custody until their trial. While their lawyers objected to this request, the court ultimately decided to deny the objection, resulting in the suspects remaining in custody.
Both individuals are residents of Limassol and hail from Brazil. The case has drawn attention due to the serious implications of their actions, especially considering the potential for extensive damage to the forest and surrounding areas.
As the trial date approaches, local authorities and community members are closely monitoring the situation, reflecting on the importance of fire safety and responsible behavior, particularly in areas prone to wildfires.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with the use of fireworks in outdoor settings, especially during dry conditions. Local fire departments and law enforcement agencies continue to emphasize the need for caution and adherence to safety regulations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
