**Famagusta, Cyprus** – Emergency services had a demanding 24-hour period, responding to a serious vehicle collision in the Famagusta district and a significant fire at a silk factory in the Nicosia district, as reported by the fire service on Wednesday.
The vehicle collision occurred at approximately 7:50 AM on Tuesday along the Liopetri-Xylofagou road. Firefighters from both the Famagusta and Xylofagou fire stations were dispatched to the scene, bringing along a rescue team and two fire engines. Utilizing specialized rescue equipment, the crews successfully extricated two individuals trapped inside their vehicles. Following their rescue, the victims were handed over to ambulance personnel and subsequently transported to the accident and emergency department at Famagusta General Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
In a separate incident, a fire erupted at a silk factory located in Ayios Dometios at around 3:14 AM on Wednesday. The fire department responded promptly, deploying five fire engines and a breathing apparatus vehicle to tackle the blaze. Firefighters worked diligently for over three hours, managing to bring the fire under control by 6:45 AM. Fortunately, all occupants of the factory had evacuated safely prior to the firefighters' arrival. However, the fire did spread to the first floor of the building, resulting in damage to a vehicle parked outside. Crews were able to prevent the flames from extending to neighboring homes and businesses. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the fire department in conjunction with relevant authorities.
In addition to these incidents, firefighters also responded to a fire involving two telescopic forklifts in an open area in Aradippou shortly after 4:25 AM on Wednesday. Both forklifts were extensively damaged, along with another telescopic forklift and a tow vehicle.
The fire department's activity extended beyond these major incidents. Firefighters tackled several vegetation fires in Pyrgos, Limassol, and Lakatamia, where several hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation, and brushwood were consumed by flames. To contain these blazes, aerial support, volunteer groups, and various agencies collaborated with the fire crews, ensuring that the fires did not spread further.
Between 6 AM on Tuesday and 6 AM on Wednesday, the fire department responded to a total of 49 incidents, which included 24 fires, 20 special service calls, and five false alarms. This busy period highlights the ongoing challenges faced by emergency services in managing fire safety and responding to accidents across the region.
