The two victims, both aged 20, had gone to swim with friends at a beach in front of a hotel at the start of the Oroklini shoreline. At some point, the two women and at least three others entered the water and began making their way toward the breakwater. Near the structure, three of the women were caught by currents and called for help. Other swimmers in the area managed to rescue one of them. Authorities were alerted and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre activated the national search and rescue plan “NEARHOS” at 19:30, deploying two Coast Guard and Marine Police speedboats, a helicopter from the 460 MED of the National Guard, a vessel from the Larnaca Airport rescue team, a vessel from the Larnaca Lifesaving Club, and two ambulances from the State Health Services Organisation. The two women were pulled unconscious from the water by Coast Guard and Marine Police crews, assisted by lifeguards, and transferred by ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital, where their deaths were confirmed. The two women, Somali nationals who worked in Cyprus, were part of a group that had come to the area to swim together. Officers from the Oroklini station took statements from the victims’ friends. Investigations into the circumstances of the deaths are continuing.
