**UCy to Offer 100 Rooms to New Students Amid Accommodation Challenges**
The University of Cyprus (UCy) is set to provide 100 accommodation rooms for new students starting in September, as part of an effort to address the ongoing demand for student housing. This announcement comes as the university prepares for the arrival of approximately 1,300 new students on September 7.
Kleanthis Pissarides, the head of the university’s academic affairs and student welfare service, shared insights on the current housing situation during an interview with the Cyprus News Agency. He emphasized that while the demand for student accommodation remains high, the university's capacity to offer housing is limited to 100 rooms, which will be allocated based on socioeconomic criteria.
"The number of students meeting the eligibility criteria is limited," Pissarides stated. He highlighted the university's commitment to assist students in need, noting that they are actively working to alleviate accommodation pressures. To this end, discussions are ongoing with relevant authorities regarding plans to construct additional dormitories.
Pissarides expressed optimism about the future of student housing at UCy, indicating that once an agreement is reached with the finance ministry and other stakeholders, the first phase of new dormitory construction could be completed within two years. This development is expected to significantly increase the availability of accommodation options for students.
In addition to the provision of housing, the university also operates a student welfare fund aimed at offering financial assistance to those in need. Pissarides mentioned that the fund's disbursements would begin in October, with the goal of ensuring that students receive support before the Christmas holiday. Similar to the housing allocations, financial assistance will also be distributed based on socioeconomic criteria.
