**UK Investigates Incident Involving Russian Warship in English Channel**
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is currently investigating reports that a Russian warship fired warning shots near a UK-registered yacht in the English Channel. The incident reportedly took place at approximately 11:40 AM BST on Tuesday, in the waters between the Isle of Wight and Normandy.
The vessel involved in the incident is believed to be the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich. According to reports, the warning shots were fired from a distance of about 500 yards (approximately 457 meters) from the yacht, which is considered a relatively close range in maritime terms. Fortunately, there were no injuries or damage reported to the yacht involved.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence confirmed the investigation, stating, "We are investigating reports of an incident in the Channel." The yacht was reportedly located around 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, which is outside UK territorial waters.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a separate operation conducted by the British military, where Royal Marine Commandos intercepted a Russian tanker carrying sanctioned oil in the Channel just days prior, on Sunday. However, British officials have indicated that they do not believe the Tuesday incident is related to the earlier operation involving the tanker.
Russian naval vessels frequently transit through the English Channel, and their movements are routinely monitored by the Royal Navy. In this case, the Admiral Grigorovich was being shadowed by the HMS Mersey, which is part of the Royal Navy's ongoing efforts to keep track of Russian naval activities in the area. Additionally, the frigate had been monitored by HMS Tyne and HMS Mersey over the weekend, following its sighting off the coast of Brest, France.
