At the time of the explosion, only 24 employees were present in the building, all of whom were reported safe. Many workers were away on summer holidays, which likely mitigated the impact of the explosion.

KNDS operates the facility through its Italian subsidiary, KNDS Ammo Italy, which specializes in manufacturing medium- and large-caliber ammunition, including the 155mm artillery shells that have been supplied to Ukraine through various European intermediaries. The company has established a significant defense relationship with Ukraine, even opening a subsidiary in Kyiv in 2024.
In the aftermath of the explosion, a preliminary investigation has been initiated, with initial reports indicating no signs of foul play. This incident is not the first of its kind for the Colleferro plant, which has a history of accidents related to weapons production. The facility has changed ownership multiple times over the decades, having previously been operated by companies such as Bombrini-Parodi-Delfino, Snia Viscosa, and Simmel Difesa before being acquired by Nexter Systems in 2014, which is now known as KNDS France.
Colleferro has experienced deadly incidents in the past linked to its munitions production. Notably, a 2007 explosion on a munitions packaging line resulted in one fatality and injuries to 13 others. The most catastrophic incident occurred in 1938, when an explosion claimed the lives of 60 individuals and injured approximately 1,500.
In a related context, earlier this week, a fire broke out at a munitions factory in Bulgaria's Gabrovo Province, prompting authorities to declare a seven-day partial state of emergency due to the risks associated with scattered shells resulting from secondary explosions.
