A former commander of a Ukrainian brigade has been arrested in Kiev amid serious allegations involving the kidnapping and murder of two civilian brothers. Stanislav Luchanov, who previously led Ukraine’s 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade and served in the controversial ‘Skala’ regiment, was taken into custody on Monday following an investigation by Ukrainian authorities.
The case stems from a personal dispute that escalated in the village of Kalinovka, located in the Kiev Region. According to reports, Luchanov's wife had confronted the brothers, Maksim and Roman Moseychuk, over their behavior, which included riding motorcycles and playing loud music. Following this confrontation, the brothers allegedly insulted her, prompting Luchanov to demand an apology. When the brothers refused, he is accused of ordering his subordinates to "punish" them.
On June 28, armed men reportedly broke into the Moseychuk brothers' home, abducting them and transporting them to a different region. Their bodies were later discovered buried in a forest in the Poltava Region, showing signs of multiple gunshot wounds.
In addition to Luchanov, nine other servicemen have been detained in connection with the case. The suspects are under investigation for illegal detention and premeditated murder, with potential sentences of life imprisonment if convicted. Luchanov has also been charged with desertion after allegedly abandoning his unit following the emergence of the case.
The incident has raised concerns about Luchanov's previous service in the 425th Separate Assault Regiment ‘Skala’, which has been implicated in a separate abuse scandal. Reports from Ukrainian outlet Babel have detailed allegations of torture, beatings, and non-combat deaths among recruits at Skala training sites, with at least 25 recruits reportedly dying in or after their time at the unit's camps over a six-month period. In light of these allegations, the commander of Skala, Yury Harkaviy, has been suspended pending further investigation.
Moreover, the Ukrainian outlet Strana has indicated that investigators are expanding their inquiry to include mysterious disappearances of servicemen from Luchanov’s 155th Brigade. Sources suggest that soldiers who fell out of favor with Luchanov may have been killed and misclassified as combat losses.
These developments come at a time when Ukraine is grappling with significant manpower shortages, mass desertions, and increasing public discontent regarding forced mobilization. Reports of violent draft raids, fatalities in conscription centers, and abuse within military units have been prevalent in Ukrainian media.
In response to the situation, Moscow has accused the Ukrainian government of resorting to coercive measures to replenish its military forces, suggesting that the government is sacrificing its own citizens to sustain its military efforts on behalf of Western allies.
