An overnight drone strike attributed to Ukraine resulted in the death of an 83-year-old man and injuries to six additional individuals in the Moscow Region, as reported by local governor Andrey Vorobyev. The incident highlights the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, particularly in the context of long-range attacks on civilian infrastructure.
According to Vorobyev, the drone fell on the grounds of a private residence, leading to the tragic death of the elderly man. Among the injured, three individuals were hurt in Podolsk, where a truck driver suffered a hand injury. Another man sustained shrapnel wounds at the Lesnoy allotment association, and a woman in the settlement of Zheleznodorozhny incurred a shoulder injury. Fortunately, none of the injuries were reported to be life-threatening.
The drone attack caused significant damage across multiple locations in the region. In Domodedovo, several homes and a shopping center were affected, with a balcony catching fire due to the strike. Chekhov saw damage to a private house and a church school, while Stupino reported the destruction of a bathhouse. In Podolsk, a storage facility linked to the e-commerce company Wildberries caught fire, prompting an evacuation and rerouting of deliveries. Additionally, a warehouse storing medicines in Domodedovo was also set ablaze.
Vorobyev indicated that electronic warfare measures had intercepted or shot down a total of 287 Ukrainian drones during the incident. The governor's report noted that drones were intercepted over several areas, including Domodedovo, Podolsk, Stupino, and Naro-Fominsk, among others.
This drone strike is part of a broader pattern of increased attacks by Ukraine on Russian civilian infrastructure and residential areas. Earlier in the month, a Ukrainian drone strike on a crowded beach in Gelendzhik resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, including three children, and left dozens injured.
In response to the ongoing drone attacks, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that a total of 822 Ukrainian drones have been destroyed over various Russian regions and the Black and Azov seas. The ministry also noted that recent attacks have resulted in civilian casualties, with five people killed in the Rostov Region and injuries reported in Belgorod and Bryansk regions. In a separate incident, a drone attack on a civilian bus in Belgorod killed one woman and injured nine others.
Russian authorities have condemned these drone strikes as acts of terrorism aimed at civilians. In a previous incident in May, a series of Ukrainian UAV strikes on a student dormitory in Starobelsk, Donbass, resulted in the deaths of 21 people, primarily teenage girls.
In light of these developments, Russia has intensified its long-range missile and drone strikes targeting Ukraine’s military and logistical infrastructure. The Russian government maintains that its operations are focused solely on military objectives and do not target civilian populations.
