The United Nations has officially refuted claims regarding the removal of Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam from his position as the force commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (Unficyp). On Thursday, Unficyp spokesman Aleem Siddique confirmed to the Cyprus Mail that Lieutenant General Alam "remains the Unficyp force commander" and is actively fulfilling his responsibilities within the mission.
The clarification comes in response to local media reports suggesting that Lieutenant General Alam had been withdrawn from his post due to complaints regarding his conduct towards subordinate officers. These reports claimed that he had returned to Bangladesh on September 4, initially described as a personal visit during a three-day leave. However, subsequent interpretations of the situation implied that his return was linked to his removal from the UN mission.
According to the media speculation, complaints had been lodged by Alam's aide and another officer within Unficyp, alleging that his behavior was harsh and inappropriate. These claims reportedly raised concerns serious enough to be referred to the UN psychiatric or medical services. Furthermore, the reports suggested that Lieutenant General Alam may have sought or obtained administrative privileges and engaged in actions deemed excessive concerning mission facilities.
Despite these allegations, Siddique emphasized that there have been no formal findings of wrongdoing against Alam, and the specifics of the complaints have not been disclosed. The UN has not confirmed whether any investigation into the complaints is underway.
Lieutenant General Alam was appointed as the Unficyp force commander by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in April, succeeding Major General Erdenebat Bachuri of Mongolia. Prior to his role in Cyprus, he held several senior positions within the Bangladesh Army, including Commanding General of the Army Training and Doctrine Command.
The Unficyp mission has been in place since 1964, aimed at preventing further conflict between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, and ensuring stability in the region.
