Parking has been one of the main day-to-day problems at the university campus for years, with students often having to arrive well ahead of time to find a space. Poorly organised parking areas have caused inconvenience, traffic congestion at peak hours and damage to vehicles. Vasos Olympiou, head of the university’s Technical Services, told philenews that work will take place at three separate sites. The first is located between the Library and the Senate building, the second between Teaching Space 2 (ΧΩΔ 2) and the Sports Centre, and the third on the other side of the Sports Centre, east of the entrance and near the sports facilities. The third site has not previously been available to students and will now be adapted for parking use. The work, costing €250,000 and funded through the university’s budget, will involve laying compacted gravel to create smoother, more functional surfaces, along with drainage to remove water and reduce the mud, dust and uneven ground that currently cause problems. Two of the three areas are expected to be fully ready by the start of the new academic year, while the third is expected to be completed by the end of September at the latest. The spaces will be temporary, but are expected to remain available for at least two years, since any further steps to develop the sites would require a process of at least two years. At a later stage, the areas may be used for other campus needs, such as new buildings or green and recreational spaces. During any future works, daily student parking is not expected to be significantly affected, as the projects will not be carried out simultaneously across all three sites. The university is also proceeding with plans for 110 permanent parking spaces, with a tender expected to be issued in September. The existing 140 parking spaces are also due to be reinforced, covered and fitted with solar panels.
