The FSB's investigation revealed that the drone components were transported into Russia using fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and balloons. Following their arrival, the parts were allegedly moved deeper into Russian territory via civilian vehicles equipped with concealed compartments designed to evade detection.
The FSB reported that the drone components were ultimately delivered to locations near the Ukrainka airfield in the Amur Region and the Shagol airfield in the Chelyabinsk Region, both crucial military sites. The agency stated that the UAVs were assembled and readied for deployment in garages rented by individuals involved in the operation.
In a decisive action, the FSB detained the suspects involved in the plot and seized a total of 24 FPV drones, each carrying explosive charges equivalent to over 1 kilogram of TNT. Furthermore, the drones were reported to be equipped with advanced AI control modules resistant to electronic warfare, manufactured in countries including the UK, the US, Canada, and Sweden.
Alongside the drones, the FSB confiscated two mobile ground control stations, which were reportedly fitted with self-destruct mechanisms, as well as communication devices used by the Ukrainian agents to coordinate with their handlers.
This incident follows a previous announcement by the FSB regarding the seizure of 13 AI-powered drones that had also been smuggled into Russia, with the intent of targeting a military airfield in the southern Rostov region.
