**US Court Dismisses Criminal Case Against Indian Billionaire Gautam Adani**

A federal court in the United States has dismissed criminal charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, following a decision by the Department of Justice (DOJ) under the administration of former President Donald Trump. The case, which involved allegations of fraud and bribery, was initially filed in 2024 by officials during President Joe Biden's term.

The charges against Adani claimed that he had conspired to bribe Indian officials in order to secure a solar contract and subsequently misled U.S. investors regarding his company's commitment to anti-corruption practices. Adani, who heads the Adani Group, did not appear in court to contest the charges.

In May, Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter informed Judge Nicholas Garaufis of the Brooklyn-based district court that the DOJ had decided to abandon the case. McCotter cited the complexities of the case, noting that it was primarily foreign in nature, difficult to prove, and not aligned with the agency’s current priorities.

The dismissal comes in the wake of Adani's announcement of a significant investment plan, in which he pledged to invest $10 billion in the U.S. economy and create approximately 15,000 jobs. However, Adani's attorney, Robert Giuffra, who is also a personal lawyer for Donald Trump, indicated that this investment could not proceed while the criminal case was ongoing.

Judge Garaufis expressed that he was satisfied the investment commitment did not influence the DOJ's decision to drop the charges. He also pointed out the limited role that judges play in reviewing the decisions made by federal prosecutors regarding the pursuit of criminal cases. However, he criticized McCotter for making the decision to dismiss the charges without consulting the prosecutors or agents who had investigated the case.

In a statement following the court's decision, Adani expressed gratitude and respect for the judicial process, stating, “I welcome the US court’s decision with humility and deep respect for the judicial process. Throughout this challenging period, our faith in truth, fairness, and the rule of law remained unwavering.” He thanked those who maintained their faith in him and the legal system.

Gautam Adani has seen significant growth in his business ventures, particularly in sectors such as energy, transport, infrastructure, defense, and mining. His rise to prominence has been closely linked to his home state of Gujarat, where he has maintained a close association with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Adani became Asia’s richest man in June, surpassing other billionaires including Mukesh Ambani and SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son.

Earlier this year, Adani and his nephew, Sagar Adani, agreed to pay $18 million to settle a civil case brought against them by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which further highlights the scrutiny faced by the Adani Group in the U.S. financial landscape.

The dismissal of the criminal charges against Gautam Adani marks a significant development in the ongoing narrative surrounding his business dealings and the regulatory environment in which he operates.
