This donation will be directed towards the procurement of protective gear, crucial for the volunteers who play a vital role in combating wildfires.
On Monday, a delegation from the federation visited the village of Pachna, where they met with Charalambos Christofinas, the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities, and Nikos Longinos, the Chief Fire Officer. The meeting also included local community leaders who were briefed on ongoing reconstruction efforts and measures taken in the aftermath of the devastating wildfires that impacted the region in 2025.
During the meeting, Commissioner Christofinas expressed gratitude for the federation's contribution, highlighting the progress made in addressing the needs of communities affected by the wildfires. He noted that, one year after the disaster, the government has made significant strides in recovery efforts. “I believe we can now say that, as a state, we have made every effort to respond to the needs of all these communities,” he stated.
Christofinas provided an update on the compensation process for homeowners affected by the wildfires, revealing that out of approximately 980 homes that sustained total or partial damage, only eight cases remain unresolved under the approved compensation schemes. He assured that the interior ministry is preparing a report for the cabinet to address these remaining cases, emphasizing a commitment to ensure that all justified claims will be compensated.
The commissioner also mentioned that the cabinet had approved measures in 2024 aimed at bolstering the protection of volunteer firefighters. The donation from the federation will significantly support these initiatives by funding the purchase of necessary protective uniforms for the volunteers.
Chief Fire Officer Longinos welcomed the donation, stating that it would enhance the recently established volunteer firefighter scheme, which has also received cabinet approval. This scheme includes insurance coverage for the volunteers, who are trained by both the fire service and the forestry department. Longinos emphasized the importance of these volunteers, noting that they provide critical first responses to wildfire incidents, particularly in the crucial first few minutes after a fire breaks out.
“The first few minutes are crucial,” Longinos remarked, underscoring the need for preparedness in the face of increasing wildfire risks due to climate change. He stressed the importance of preventive measures and the necessity for authorities to remain vigilant and ready to respond to any incidents swiftly.
Longinos highlighted ongoing efforts to improve fire prevention strategies and response capabilities, stating, “We must prevent these incidents wherever possible, and we are doing everything we can to be as prepared as possible and address any weaknesses, because there is always room for improvement.”
Kyriakos Papastylianou, president of the Federation of Cypriot Organisations of America, reaffirmed the dedication of the Cypriot diaspora to support their homeland, despite the geographical distance. “We hope these uniforms will never be needed, but it is better to have them available in case of an emergency,” he remarked, describing the donation as a small token of appreciation for the ongoing efforts to prevent future wildfires.
