US envoy brands violent Israeli settlers ‘terrorists’

• What happened: US Ambassador to West Jerusalem Mike Huckabee labeled violent Israeli settlers as "terrorists" and called for accountability for their actions against Palestinians, highlighting a significant increase in settler violence in the West Bank. • Why it matters: Huckabee's remarks underscore the growing concern over the impact of settler violence on Palestinian communities and Israel's international reputation, particularly amid ongoing tensions following the recent military operations in Gaza. • What to watch next: Monitor the Israeli government's response to Huckabee's statements and any potential changes in policy regarding settler violence, as well as developments in the ongoing conflict in the West Bank and Gaza.

Violent Israeli settlers are “terrorists” who must be held accountable for targeting Palestinians, US Ambassador to West Jerusalem Mike Huckabee has said.

The UN relief agency, OCHA, said in August that there were an average of six settler violence incidents every day in the occupied West Bank during the first six months of 2026. The attacks by radicalized Jews have seen more than 2,300 Palestinians, including over 1,000 children, displaced, it added.

Huckabee, who is a strong supporter of Israel and calls himself a Christian Zionist, visited the town of Turmus Ayya near Ramallah on Saturday. The area has been frequently targeted by settlers this year, and around 80% of the town’s population of 3,000 people are Palestinian Americans, according to its mayor.

During his meeting with residents, Huckabee said that “if there are squatters that come in and put up their own flags and take possession of something that does not belong to them, if they burn a car, if they torch a mosque, if they go into someone’s home and vandalize it, paint graffiti on the walls, that’s a criminal act. But it extends beyond a criminal act. It’s an act of terror.”

The Israeli government must provide security to Palestinians in the West Bank and make sure that those who attack their homes are aware that they will face “severe consequences,” he stressed.

According to Huckabee, doing so is in Israel’s “best interest” because the violent settlers damage the country’s reputation “when it appears that this tiny little group of marauders are somehow representative of the larger population.”

“There may be a few hundred who are responsible, but that’s a few hundred too many,” he said.

The US envoy already labeled the settlers “terrorist” in August after a series of attacks in the town of Qusra in the West Bank. Last week, after radicalized Jews set fire to a mosque in the village of Bizzariya, they sprayed graffiti on a wall, reading: “Regards to Huckabee from the terrorists.”

Huckabee made headlines in February after telling US journalist Tucker Carlson that Israel has the right to almost the entire Middle East because the Bible says so.

Carlson pointed out that, according to the Book of Genesis, the territory offered by God to the Hebrew patriarch stretched “from the Euphrates to the Nile,” which includes current Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and some parts of Saudi Arabia. “It would be fine if they [the Israelis] took it all,” the ambassador replied.

According to the UN, violence in the West Bank has been at an “all-time high” since Israel launched its military operation in Gaza in response to an incursion by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

Over 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in the areas since then, with new illegal settlements being approved by the Israeli authorities and the country’s military often attacking Muslim communities together with the settlers, it said.
