**US Sanctions Indian Firm Over Links to Iran's Mahan Air**
In a significant move, the United States has imposed sanctions on Skiez Travels and Logistics Private Limited, a company based in New Delhi that acts as a representative for Iran's Mahan Air in India. This action is part of a broader strategy targeting entities in Russia and China that are also associated with the privately owned airline, which has faced scrutiny for its connections to the Iranian military.
The U.S. Treasury Department announced the sanctions, stating that Skiez Travels and Logistics, along with Russia's Air Cargo Pro Limited, serves as general sales agents for Mahan Air in their respective countries. The Treasury's statement emphasized that providing financial services, logistics, or commercial support to Mahan Air or the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) contributes to the sustenance of what it describes as a "terrorist enterprise."
Mahan Air has been under sanctions from both the U.S. and the European Union for its alleged role in supporting the IRGC. The Treasury Department claims that, despite presenting itself as a civilian airline, Mahan Air has been instrumental in facilitating military operations for the IRGC-Qods Force, including the transport of personnel, military training, and the procurement of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and weapons.
Skiez Travels has been representing Mahan Air in India since 2020, managing ticket and cargo sales as well as customer support for the airline in the absence of a local office. The sanctions against Skiez are part of a larger pattern of U.S. actions aimed at curbing Iran's influence and military capabilities.
In addition to Skiez, the U.S. has targeted several other entities linked to Mahan Air. These include Shanghai Wings International Logistics Co. and Shanghai Elite International Travel Co., both based in China, which serve as general sales agents for Mahan Air in that region. The executive director of Shanghai Elite, Tang Xin, is also among those sanctioned. Furthermore, DadeNegar Startup Studio, described by the Treasury as a front company affiliated with the IRGC, has also been included in the sanctions list.
The sanctions come amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran, marked by a series of military exchanges and attacks. The situation has escalated following U.S.-Israeli operations against Iranian targets, contributing to a near-complete blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global energy supplies.
This latest round of sanctions is not the first time Indian entities have been targeted by the U.S. In previous actions, dozens of Indian companies and individuals have faced sanctions as part of the U.S. government's ongoing efforts to counteract Iranian influence and activities.
The implications of these sanctions for Skiez Travels and its operations remain to be seen, but they underscore the complexities of international business in regions affected by geopolitical tensions. As the U.S. continues to enforce its sanctions regime, companies operating in similar sectors may need to reassess their affiliations and compliance with international regulations to avoid potential repercussions.
