**US Strikes Three Iranian Crude Oil Tankers Amid Escalating Tensions**
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday that it has conducted strikes on three Iranian crude oil tankers, citing the attacks as retaliation for a series of alleged unprovoked assaults on US naval vessels in the region. This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, which have seen a recent surge in military confrontations.
According to CENTCOM, the strikes were executed in response to multiple unsuccessful attacks on a US aircraft carrier and a destroyer. The situation escalated earlier in the week when both nations exchanged a series of strikes, with the US accusing Iran of targeting commercial shipping and US troops in the area. In retaliation, Iran launched a missile and drone attack against US facilities located in the Gulf.
CENTCOM identified the three tankers targeted in the strikes as part of a larger “multibillion-dollar shadow network” that allegedly finances Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The vessels included two loaded tankers: the M/T Downy, positioned off Kharg Island—home to Iran's primary oil hub—and the M/T Kylo, located near the city of Jask. Additionally, the US military reported that an empty oil carrier, also named M/T Kylo, was completely destroyed in the Gulf of Oman.
Footage released by CENTCOM shows the strikes on the three vessels, indicating that the first two tankers were "permanently disabled" due to damage to their machinery compartments. The M/T Kylo reportedly suffered a catastrophic explosion after sustaining multiple hits. Prior to the attack, the US military directed the crew of the tanker to abandon ship.
Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, emphasized the message behind the strikes, stating, "Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost – taking out three of yours."
In response to the US strikes, Iranian officials have threatened retaliation. The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters warned that the US could face “more severe” attacks on its military vessels in the region if it continues to "harass" Iranian shipping and maintain a blockade of Iranian ports. Following these warnings, the IRGC announced that it had targeted three oil tankers deemed to be trespassing in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as three vessels linked to the US.
Iran has previously issued stern warnings regarding its oil infrastructure, asserting that it would retaliate against any attacks on its facilities, particularly those located on Kharg Island. The Iranian leadership has indicated that it could set the oil and gas infrastructure of US allies in the Gulf on fire if provoked.
