**Van de Ven Named Tottenham Hotspur Captain as De Zerbi Unveils Leadership Group**
Tottenham Hotspur has officially appointed Micky van de Ven as the club's captain for the upcoming season, as announced by manager Roberto De Zerbi on Friday. The 25-year-old Netherlands international will lead a five-man leadership group that also includes World Cup-winner Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, James Maddison, and Archie Gray.
Van de Ven takes over the captaincy from Cristian Romero, who recently transferred to Atletico Madrid. De Zerbi emphasized the importance of having multiple leaders on the pitch, stating, “Every one of them deserves to be captain or in the group of the captains, but personality and passion is not if you are captain or not captain.”
Despite the leadership changes, both Van de Ven and Porro will be unavailable for Tottenham's opening Premier League match against Brentford on Saturday. Van de Ven is currently sidelined due to an injury sustained during pre-season training in Australia. De Zerbi noted that while the injury is not severe, it has prevented Van de Ven from participating in the match. Porro, on the other hand, has only recently returned to training after celebrating Spain's World Cup victory.
De Zerbi, who joined Tottenham towards the end of last season when the club was facing relegation, successfully guided the team to safety. His arrival marked a turning point for the club, which had been struggling in the league. Following a significant summer transfer window, in which Tottenham invested in players like Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Jan Paul van Hecke, there are renewed hopes for a more successful campaign this year.
While De Zerbi refrained from commenting on the potential signing of Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City, he expressed satisfaction with the club's transfer activities so far. He remarked, “We have not finished in the transfer market. It’s an important part. So far we have brought in some great players, great spirit, and great personality.”
As Tottenham prepares for the season ahead, the leadership structure under Van de Ven is expected to play a crucial role in fostering team cohesion and performance on the pitch. The absence of key players in the opening match will test the depth and resilience of the squad as they aim to improve upon their previous league finishes.
