**West Nile Virus Cases in Cyprus Rise to Six, One Fatality Reported**
Cyprus is currently facing a rise in West Nile virus infections, with the health ministry confirming six cases to date, including one death. The ministry reported on Thursday that three individuals are receiving treatment in hospitals, while an elderly patient with pre-existing health conditions has succumbed to the virus.
The first confirmed case of West Nile virus in Cyprus was identified in mid-August, involving a 74-year-old man who was admitted to the intensive care unit at Nicosia General Hospital. Since then, the number of confirmed cases has steadily increased, prompting health officials to monitor the situation closely.
As of now, there are also two additional suspected cases under investigation, indicating that the potential for further infections remains a concern. The health ministry emphasized that none of the confirmed patients had traveled recently, suggesting that the virus is being transmitted locally, primarily through mosquito bites. "There is no such thing as person-to-person infection," a ministry spokesperson clarified, reiterating that the virus is exclusively transmitted via infected mosquitoes.
In response to the rising cases, the health ministry is implementing a series of measures aimed at controlling the spread of the virus. These include tracking existing cases, conducting mosquito-control spraying in the vicinity of infected individuals' homes, and identifying local water sources that may serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
Despite the increase in cases, the health ministry has stated that they are not on high alert. Health officials continue to assert that the situation is manageable, with deputy director Elizavet Constantinou previously stating that the number of infections had not led to a significant rise in hospitalizations.
The ministry anticipates that additional cases may be confirmed soon, with expectations of one to two more cases being reported throughout the day. As the situation develops, health authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to mitigate the impact of the virus on public health in Cyprus.
Residents are advised to take preventive measures against mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and eliminating standing water around their homes to reduce mosquito breeding sites. The health ministry continues to provide updates as necessary and encourages the public to stay informed about the risks associated with West Nile virus.
