**Wizz Air Achieves Record Low Carbon Emissions Intensity in Sustainability Report**
Budget airline Wizz Air announced on Monday that it has achieved a record low in carbon emissions intensity, as detailed in its sustainability report for the financial year 2026. The airline's efficiency-driven operating model has played a crucial role in this achievement, supporting both its long-term competitiveness and ongoing expansion.
The sustainability report follows the release of Wizz Air's annual report and highlights significant progress in various areas, including emissions reduction, fleet modernization, workforce growth, and the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
During the financial year, Wizz Air successfully reduced its carbon emissions intensity to 50.6 grams of CO₂ per revenue passenger kilometer (CO₂/RPK), marking a 3 percent improvement from the previous year and the best performance in the airline's history. This milestone is attributed to the airline's continued investment in one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in the aviation sector. As of March 31, 2026, Wizz Air's fleet had expanded to 262 aircraft, with an average age of just 4.57 years. Notably, 75 percent of the fleet comprises new-generation Airbus A320neo family aircraft, which are designed to reduce emissions while providing a structural cost advantage.
In addition to its environmental initiatives, Wizz Air remains committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. The airline employs individuals from over 100 nationalities and expanded its workforce by 2,775 employees during the financial year to support its growth across Europe and ensure reliable, affordable air travel.
As part of its decarbonization efforts, Wizz Air utilized more than 27,000 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel during the financial year, aligning with the European Union's ReFuelEU Aviation initiative. Looking ahead, the airline plans to further increase its use of SAF and invest in innovative technologies that can facilitate long-term emissions reductions. However, Wizz Air acknowledges that the limited availability and higher costs associated with SAF pose challenges to the pace of aviation decarbonization, underscoring the importance of operational efficiency in its environmental strategy.
Dorottya Durucsko, Head of Government Affairs and Sustainability at Wizz Air, emphasized that the airline's environmental performance is deeply rooted in operational discipline and efficiency. "At Wizz Air, sustainability is driven by efficiency, through the way we operate every day with disciplined execution, continuous fleet renewal, and an engaged workforce," she stated. This approach enables the airline to reduce emissions intensity while maintaining a resilient and cost-efficient operational model.
Durucsko also noted that future progress in sustainability will depend on broader developments within the aviation industry, particularly in the areas of increasing SAF production and enhancing system-wide efficiency. "Our focus is to remain optimized for today, while contributing pragmatically to the long-term decarbonization of aviation," she added.
Wizz Air's commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency positions it as a leader in the budget airline sector, demonstrating that it is possible to balance growth with environmental responsibility. As the airline continues to navigate the challenges of the aviation industry, its focus on reducing emissions and investing in sustainable practices will be crucial in shaping its future trajectory.
