**Zelenskiy Warns of Retaliation as Drone Strikes Target Moscow**
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy issued a stark warning on Thursday, stating that if Russian strikes against Ukraine continue, "Moscow will burn." His comments came in the wake of heavy drone attacks on Russia, which he characterized as retaliation for a recent strike that damaged the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery.
In a voice message shared with reporters via WhatsApp, Zelenskiy emphasized that Ukraine does not desire war, asserting, “We don’t want this war, we never did, and everyone knows it, and our partners know it.” He further stated, “But if Ukraine burns, your Moscow will burn,” highlighting the escalating tensions between the two nations.
The drone strikes targeted Moscow overnight, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. Reports indicate that this was the second time within the week that Moscow's oil refinery was hit, underscoring the intensity of the military actions being taken by Ukraine in response to Russian aggression.
The backdrop to these developments includes a tragic incident earlier in the week when at least 10 people were killed in a drone and missile attack that resulted in damage to the 1,000-year-old monastery in Kyiv. This attack has drawn international condemnation and has intensified calls for a robust response from Ukraine's allies.
Zelenskiy was scheduled to attend a meeting of Ukraine’s military allies in Brussels on Thursday, where he intended to discuss the supply of air defense systems to Ukraine through a NATO program. He also aimed to address the creation of an anti-ballistic missile system with the support of Ukraine’s allies.
In his message, Zelenskiy urged European nations and the United States to increase sanctions on Russia, particularly targeting its defense and energy sectors, as well as its broader economy. He called for a united front to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the conflict. “Everyone needs to put pressure on Putin: Ukrainians, absolutely all the Europeans, Americans, and Russians – it’s time to sober up and put pressure on their leader,” he stated.
The ongoing conflict has drawn significant international attention, with various nations expressing support for Ukraine and condemning Russia's military actions. As the situation continues to develop, the potential for further escalation remains a concern for both regional stability and global security.
Zelenskiy’s remarks reflect the heightened stakes in the conflict, as both sides prepare for what could be a protracted and increasingly violent confrontation. The international community watches closely as diplomatic efforts continue alongside military preparations.
