**Zelensky Issues Ultimatum to Belarus Amid Heightened Tensions**
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has escalated his rhetoric towards Belarus, threatening military action unless President Alexander Lukashenko removes communication towers along their shared 1,000-kilometer border. Zelensky's ultimatum, issued on Sunday, comes amid ongoing concerns regarding Belarus's support for Russia in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Zelensky stated that the Ukrainian military would target the Belarusian communication towers if they are not taken offline. He claims these towers are being utilized by Russia to coordinate drone strikes against Ukraine. "At the intelligence and military levels, Belarus received a message: stop helping the Russians," Zelensky said in a post on social media platform X. He emphasized that the issue with the relay stations has persisted for an extended period.
Despite Belarus's historical stance of remaining largely neutral in the Ukraine conflict since its onset in 2022, Zelensky's warnings signal a shift in Ukraine's approach towards its northern neighbor. While Belarus has called for dialogue between Moscow and Kiev, Zelensky has accused Lukashenko of failing to demonstrate genuine peaceful intentions. "If he does not remove them, we will remove everything ourselves," he asserted, framing the statement not as a threat but as a factual declaration.
In response to Zelensky's remarks, Lukashenko has maintained that Belarus has no desire to engage in warfare and is not a threat to any nation. He recently warned that those attempting to involve Belarus in the conflict would "have to pay dearly for that." This statement followed a controversial incident in Russia's Bryansk Region, which resulted in injuries to six children and the death of a woman accompanying a youth soccer team. Kiev has denied any involvement in the attack, while Zelensky has called for transparency from Lukashenko regarding Belarus's role in the conflict.
Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin echoed Lukashenko's sentiments, asserting that it would make no strategic sense for Belarus to enter the conflict unless provoked. He highlighted the country's geographical position, bordered by three NATO member states, as a significant deterrent against entering a war.
In addition to the communication towers, Ukrainian military officials have identified approximately 500 strategic military and logistical targets within Belarus. This information was shared by the commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, indicating a comprehensive assessment of potential threats emanating from Belarus.
Lukashenko responded to the identification of these targets, suggesting that while Ukraine may have pinpointed numerous sites, Belarus has its own "very serious target" with precise coordinates, hinting at the proximity of Kiev to the Belarusian border.
