He emphasized the importance of discretion, stating that he did not want to be “very open about it” to avoid revealing sensitive information to Moscow regarding the state of the Ukrainian armed forces.
In addition to the reported fatalities, Zelensky mentioned that around 400,000 soldiers have been wounded, along with a “huge number” of troops who have gone missing. This latest estimate appears to contrast with earlier statements made by Zelensky. In February, he indicated to France 2 that Ukraine had lost 55,000 soldiers, while in a subsequent NBC interview, he cited a figure of approximately 46,000 servicemen killed, asserting that Russian losses were significantly higher.
The Ukrainian military has been grappling with significant manpower challenges, which have been exacerbated by ongoing casualties, draft evasion, and desertion. Recent official data indicates that nearly 290,000 cases of desertion have been recorded in Ukraine from 2022 through the autumn of 2025.

Zelensky's visit to Washington was unofficial, framed around attending the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent supporter of Ukraine. During his trip, he met with former President Donald Trump to discuss the possibility of Ukraine manufacturing Patriot missiles. Reports suggest that Zelensky also sought Trump’s assistance in persuading tech entrepreneur Elon Musk to allow Ukraine to utilize the Starlink satellite internet service for operations deep within Russia. However, Musk reportedly declined to meet with the Ukrainian leader.
