**Zimbabwe Ferry Disaster Death Toll Rises to 94**
The death toll from the tragic ferry disaster on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has reached 94, according to an updated report from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Tuesday. Recovery operations are ongoing as search teams continue to scour the area for any additional victims or missing persons.
The incident occurred on August 11 when a ferry operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) capsized while en route from the town of Kariba to various remote communities and fishing camps along the lake. At the time of the accident, the ferry was carrying approximately 180 passengers along with cargo. Reports indicate that the vessel encountered strong waves, which may have contributed to the capsizing.
In the days following the disaster, the ZRP reported a gradual increase in the confirmed death toll, which rose from 93 on Monday to the current figure of 94. So far, 83 of the deceased have been identified by their relatives, and among the victims are several young children.
In response to the disaster, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared the event a national disaster. He has mandated maritime safety agencies and security forces to address the deficiencies in the country’s maritime operations. President Mnangagwa expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and assured that medical, funeral, and psychosocial support services are being provided to those in need.
The African Union (AU) has also extended its condolences, with AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressing solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe and the affected communities. Similarly, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) conveyed its sincere condolences and solidarity with the nation during this difficult time.
Fatal boat accidents are not uncommon in Africa, where issues such as overcrowding and inadequate safety standards frequently contribute to such tragedies. For instance, just last month, a wooden vessel in Nigeria's Niger State capsized while carrying around 90 passengers, resulting in at least 29 fatalities. Authorities attributed that incident to overloading and the boat striking a submerged tree stump.
As recovery efforts continue on Lake Kariba, the focus remains on locating any remaining missing individuals and providing support to the grieving families. The tragedy has raised questions about maritime safety regulations in Zimbabwe and the need for improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future.
