**27 Arrested in SBA Summer Crackdown**
The British Bases Administration (SBA) police have reported the arrest of 27 individuals over the past week as part of a comprehensive summer operation aimed at enhancing public safety and order across the bases. The coordinated efforts, which took place in both the eastern and western regions of the SBAs, are designed to prevent and detect crime, improve road safety, and maintain public order during the bustling summer season.
In addition to the arrests, the police issued a total of 158 fixed penalty notices and written cautions for various traffic-related offences. Authorities are currently investigating 17 cases involving more serious violations. As part of their initiative to ensure road safety, officers conducted 73 breathalyser tests, with seven individuals testing positive for alcohol consumption.
The operations have also seen the involvement of the SBA police marine unit, which has recently enhanced its capabilities with the acquisition of new jet skis. These jet skis are being utilized to patrol the beaches within the bases, further ensuring the safety of beachgoers during the peak summer months.
Dhekelia's temporary superintendent, Marcos Petrou, indicated that the operations would continue throughout the week as the island approaches the peak holiday period in August. He emphasized that officers and specialist units would focus their efforts on times and locations where their presence could have the most significant impact on public safety.
With an increase in visitors expected along the coast, Petrou urged beachgoers to take necessary precautions against theft. "Don’t give thieves an easy opportunity. Keep valuables out of sight, lock your vehicles, and never leave personal belongings unattended on the beach," he advised.
Similarly, Akrotiri's temporary superintendent, Melina Papagregoriou, echoed these sentiments, encouraging residents to secure their homes and belongings as many people travel during the August holiday period. "As many people take advantage of the August holiday period, we encourage residents to take simple precautions to protect their homes, vehicles, and personal belongings," she stated.
Papagregoriou advised that properties should be adequately secured when left unattended and that valuables should not be left visible or unsecured in vehicles. She also urged community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police, noting that taking a few simple preventative measures could significantly reduce the risk of crime during the holiday season.
