**30 Percent of Cyprus Now Part of Natura 2000 Network**
Approximately 30 percent of Cyprus' territory has been integrated into the Natura 2000 network, a significant environmental initiative aimed at conserving biodiversity across Europe. This announcement was made by Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis during a meeting of the House environment committee on Wednesday. The Natura 2000 network is a European Union-wide system of protected areas that aims to ensure the survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.
Minister Senekis reported that 72 areas in Cyprus have been designated as special areas of conservation or protection under this network. This designation is part of the government's broader commitment to environmental sustainability and conservation efforts.
During the committee meeting, Senekis outlined four primary environmental priorities for the upcoming period. These priorities include:
1. **Resilient Forests and Natural Disaster Prevention**: The government aims to enhance forest resilience and implement strategies to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.
2. **Resilient Nature**: This priority focuses on the overall health and sustainability of natural ecosystems in Cyprus.
3. **Circular and Competitive Green Economy**: The government is looking to promote a green economy that is both sustainable and competitive, emphasizing the importance of circular economic practices.
4. **Sustainable Management of Natural and Mineral Resources**: A budget of €25.5 million has been allocated for the transition to a modern forest protection system, which will support the sustainable management of Cyprus' natural resources.
In discussing the fishing and aquaculture sectors, Senekis emphasized the importance of supporting local incomes, enhancing competitiveness, and maintaining vibrant coastal communities. These efforts are seen as crucial for the sustainability of these industries in the face of environmental challenges.
The minister also addressed ongoing developments in the Akamas region, noting that the ministry is revising its development plan to minimize environmental impact. The new infrastructure plan has been adjusted to reduce its footprint by approximately 700 square meters, reflecting a commitment to sustainable development practices.
Additionally, Senekis provided updates on waste management initiatives, including a comprehensive viability study for a new network of waste management facilities. This study will inform planning for waste management from 2029 to 2035 and is expected to be completed by 2028. Efforts are also underway to establish smaller recycling points in mountainous and remote areas to improve access to recycling services.
Regarding the issue of illegal dumping, the government has allocated a total of €2.22 million for clean-up operations, highlighting its commitment to addressing environmental pollution.
On the topic of climate change and the green transition, Senekis reported that 142 emissions allowance auctions have been held, generating net revenues of €109.04 million for the Republic. This revenue is intended to support various environmental initiatives and projects.
Furthermore, the minister mentioned that geological suitability maps are currently being prepared, along with studies aimed at developing a national critical raw materials strategy. This strategy is expected to enhance the country's resource management and sustainability efforts.
