The man appeared before the Limassol District Court on Thursday, August 6, without a lawyer. Limassol Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) investigators requested an eight-day detention order, which he did not oppose. The court approved the request and issued the detention order. According to the information gathered so far, the alleged offences took place between 2022 and 2023 in Limassol and Nicosia. However, according to philenews sources, the number of complainants appears to be higher than the 20 cases reported. Police complaints allege that the 37-year-old presented himself as a vehicle importer and persuaded members of the public either to hand over their cars for sale or to pay deposits for vehicle imports. In some cases, vehicle owners allegedly gave him their cars to sell, and he is alleged to have resold them without paying the proceeds to the legal owners. In other cases, he allegedly collected deposits from prospective buyers but never proceeded with purchasing and importing the vehicles he had agreed to bring to Cyprus. Authorities were already familiar with the suspect, who had previously come to the attention of the authorities through his involvement in the high-profile case involving 645 kilograms of MDMA exported from Cyprus to Australia in June 2020 hidden inside traditional charcoal grills. The then 32-year-old admitted a conspiracy charge and was sentenced to four years in prison. He was later included in the witness protection programme after cooperating with authorities and was expected to testify for the prosecution against his 59-year-old co-defendant, who later admitted guilt. The 37-year-old had been arrested in Britain under a European arrest warrant issued by Cypriot authorities and was later extradited to Cyprus. He was arrested in the early hours of Thursday under a court warrant upon his arrival at Larnaca Airport before being taken before the Limassol District Court. TAE Limassol is continuing its investigations. Investigators are expected to take a statement from the suspect, collect handwriting and signature samples for forensic examination, and carry out identification parades linked to the complainants’ allegations.
