**500-Year-Old Oak Leads Paphos’s Smart Tourism Trail**
*Paphos, Cyprus – August 24, 2026* – The ancient oak tree located in the community of Fyti, which is over 500 years old, has become a centerpiece in Paphos's initiative to enhance smart tourism through technology. This remarkable tree has been equipped with a smart QR-code sign for nearly two years, allowing visitors to engage with the site in an interactive manner.
The QR-code system enables tourists to scan the code with their mobile devices, providing them with the option to select their preferred language. Once accessed, users can explore a wealth of information about the ancient oak, including details about its historical significance, the importance of forest conservation, the benefits that trees provide to both people and the environment, and insights into the life cycle of trees. The digital content also features photographs and videos that enrich the visitor experience.
The initiative is part of a broader smart signage program implemented by Paphos tourism authorities, aimed at transforming the region into a smart destination. This program has seen the installation of 23 QR-code signs at various monuments and points of interest throughout the Paphos district over the past two years.
The completion of the fifth phase of this signage program has included installations in several areas, such as Yeroskipou, Akamas, Chloraka, Choli, Salamiou, Simou, and Drousia. Following the successful rollout of these signs, plans for a sixth phase have already been established, which will cover more than 18 additional locations.
This innovative approach to tourism not only enhances the visitor experience but also promotes awareness about the local environment and heritage. By integrating technology into the exploration of Paphos’s natural and historical sites, the initiative aims to attract more tourists while fostering a deeper appreciation for the region's cultural and ecological treasures.
As Paphos continues to develop its smart tourism strategy, the ancient oak tree stands as a symbol of the intersection between history and modern technology, inviting visitors to connect with the past while engaging with the future.
