**Archbishop Makarios’ Historic Harley-Davidson Fully Restored**
A significant piece of Cypriot history has been revitalized with the complete restoration of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle that once served as part of the official escort fleet for Archbishop Makarios III. The motorcycle, which had been out of service for over 50 years, is now fully operational and is housed at the police museum in Nicosia, where it stands as one of the most notable exhibits.
The restoration project was undertaken through a collaboration with Harley-Davidson Cyprus, which managed the entire process at no cost to the police or the museum. This initiative underscores the commitment to preserving historical artifacts that reflect the rich heritage of Cyprus.
The motorcycle was originally donated to Archbishop Makarios in 1977 by a Cypriot expatriate living in the United States, who was a shareholder in the Cadillac company. This generous donation included not only the Harley-Davidson motorcycle but also three additional motorcycles and a Cadillac Fleetwood 60 special limousine. The limousine is currently displayed outside the Archbishop’s Palace alongside a Mercedes Benz 600 Pullman that once belonged to the former president.
According to police officials, the motorcycle was an essential component of the escort unit responsible for ensuring the safety of Makarios during official engagements and state processions. Its historical significance is heightened by its association with one of the most prominent figures in Cypriot history, who served as the first President of Cyprus from 1960 until his death in 1977.
The restoration process involved a complete rebuild of the motorcycle, carefully restoring it to operational condition while maintaining its historical character. Police reports indicate that the motorcycle is now in “excellent condition,” allowing it to be showcased as a testament to both the craftsmanship of Harley-Davidson and the importance of preserving national heritage.
The restoration of this motorcycle not only honors the legacy of Archbishop Makarios but also serves as a reminder of the enduring connection between Cyprus and its history. As it stands in the police museum, the motorcycle invites visitors to reflect on the past and the pivotal moments that have shaped the nation.
This project highlights the collaborative efforts between private enterprises and public institutions in preserving cultural heritage, ensuring that future generations can appreciate and learn from the artifacts that represent their history. The restored Harley-Davidson motorcycle is expected to attract interest from both locals and tourists, further enhancing the cultural offerings of Nicosia.
