At around 11.30 pm, the prison transport vehicle was in the hospital courtyard, outside the psychiatric ward. Inside the van were the inmate and two people who, according to the same information, were members of the prison’s external security team. The inmate’s accomplices then arrived in vehicles resembling police vehicles. Based on the information available so far, there is no indication that the suspects wore police uniforms or presented themselves as members of the Greek Police Special Operations Unit (OPKE). However, one of the vehicles was reportedly a Nissan Navara-type vehicle, similar to those used by OPKE units, and was fitted with a small emergency light. This led the escort officers to initially believe they were dealing with police officers. The situation changed within seconds when the occupants stepped out of the vehicle carrying Kalashnikov rifles. The armed men immobilised the escorts at gunpoint and helped the 41-year-old escape. According to the same information, they also took a service weapon belonging to a prison officer before fleeing in their vehicles. At the time of the escape, two other inmates were also inside the hospital after being transferred under a different escort. The escaped inmate is a 41-year-old Albanian national who, according to reports, had been arrested last year by organised crime officers in connection with an attempted murder case in Thessaloniki involving a shooting incident at a food kiosk. He is also reportedly linked to weapons and drug-related cases. Authorities launched a major search operation after the escape, looking for both the 41-year-old inmate and the armed accomplices involved in the operation. They have not yet been located. Manhunt under way for inmate and accomplices Greek police have launched a manhunt for the escaped prisoner and those who helped him flee. Interpol and all exit points from the country have been alerted, while one of the vehicles used by the suspects has been found and was found to have fake number plates. The inmate is described as a dangerous criminal and, according to reports, has previously opened fire in Thessaloniki in broad daylight. The Hellenic Police investigation remains ongoing.
