Police said coordinated operations in both the east and west aim to prevent and detect crime, enhance road safety, maintain public order and provide reassurance to local communities. Officers issued a combined total of 158 fixed penalty notices and written cautions for various road traffic offences, with a further 17 cases now under investigation for more serious traffic violations. Road safety enforcement also included 73 alcohol breath tests, which produced seven positive results. The high-profile police presence also included the Marine Unit, which has recently taken delivery of new jet skis to help keep beachgoers safe within the British Bases. Dhekelia’s Temporary Superintendent, Marcos Petrou, said operations across the British Bases will continue, especially this week, which marks the peak of the holiday period on the island. He said officers and specialist units will focus on the times and locations where their presence can have the greatest impact on public safety. With even more beachgoers expected at the coast over the weekend, Petrou warned: “Don’t give thieves an easy opportunity.” He added that people should keep valuables out of sight, lock their vehicles, and never leave personal belongings unattended on the beach. Temporary Superintendent Melina Papagregoriou, in Akrotiri, also had words of warning for people leaving their homes. She said that with many people taking advantage of the August holiday period, residents are encouraged to take simple precautions to protect their homes, vehicles and belongings. Papagregoriou said properties should be properly secured when left unattended, and valuables should not be left visible or unsecured in vehicles. She added: “Residents must remain vigilant within their communities and should report any suspicious activity to police.” Taking a few simple preventative measures, she said, can significantly reduce opportunities for acquisitive crime during the holiday period.
