**British Bases Police Make 80 Arrests During Summer Operations**
The British bases police have reported a significant increase in law enforcement activity during the summer months, announcing a total of 80 arrests and over 700 maritime checks conducted between June and August. This period marked the peak summer season, with a particular focus on coastal areas and roads surrounding the British Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) in Cyprus.
Lady’s Mile and Curium beaches, two popular destinations, welcomed more than 700,000 visitors during the summer. In response to the influx of tourists, the British bases police increased their presence in these areas, which resulted in 74 arrests and the initiation of 12 criminal cases specifically at these beaches.
In addition to beach-related incidents, road safety enforcement was a key component of the summer operations. The police reported 22 cases of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, alongside five cases of dangerous driving. These efforts highlight the police's commitment to maintaining safety on the roads, particularly during a time when traffic is likely to increase due to the summer tourist season.
The police marine unit also played a crucial role in ensuring maritime safety. They issued 35 fixed penalty notices in the Dhekelia area after conducting 712 checks on boats and jet skis across the island. This proactive approach aimed to deter unsafe practices on the water and ensure compliance with maritime regulations.
Temporary Superintendent Melina Papagregoriou commented on the operations, emphasizing the collaborative effort required for effective law enforcement both on land and at sea. She expressed gratitude to officers and partner agencies for their contributions during this busy season.
Looking ahead, Superintendent Papagregori stated that routine patrols would continue even after the seasonal operations concluded. Officers will remain vigilant to detect and prosecute any criminal activity, ensuring that safety and security remain a priority in the British bases.
The summer operations reflect the ongoing commitment of the British bases police to uphold law and order, especially during peak tourist times, and to safeguard both residents and visitors in the area.
