The father was released on bail under strict conditions on July 21 to secure his presence at trial. A significant development in the case is the finding, from toxicology tests, that he had alcohol in his system at the relevant time. The case file was sent to the Attorney General of the Republic for instructions when the father’s eight-day detention order was due to expire. The Attorney General gave instructions to prosecute the father over the death of his three-year-old son, after reviewing the available evidence and attributing responsibility for the criminal offence of causing death through a reckless, rash or dangerous act. It also emerged that toxicology tests carried out on the 37-year-old after the tragic incident found a quantity of alcohol in his system, a factor the court will assess when hearing the case. Police have not disclosed the specific amount, however. The court ordered the father’s conditional release until today’s hearing. He was placed under bail conditions requiring a cash deposit of €20,000, having his name placed on a stop list, surrendering his travel documents, signing in once a week at Paphos central police station, being barred from crossing roadblocks, and declaring his full residential address to police during this period. Today’s proceedings at Paphos Courthouse are being followed with intense interest in Cyprus, Britain and other countries, after the father’s relatives recently appealed to the British Government to allow him to travel home for his son’s burial. The incident took place on the afternoon of Sunday, July 12, at a hotel in the coastal area of Chlorakas, where the British family had checked in for their holiday just hours earlier. Police investigations found that the three-year-old boy fell while playing with his father in the corridor of the fourth floor, where their room was, as they waited for the lift to take them to the restaurant. The boy slipped from his father’s hands in a rare moment of misfortune and fell through an open window in front of them. An ambulance was called to the scene from Paphos Hospital, but by the time paramedics arrived, the child was not responding. He was taken to Paphos Hospital, where doctors on duty confirmed his death. CID Paphos officers arrived at the scene and began investigating the circumstances that led to the tragic incident. The father was arrested a few hours later, facing allegations of inadequate supervision of the minor, since he had been responsible for supervising the child at the time of the incident.
