**Burnham Advocates for Stronger UK-EU Relations During Kyiv Visit**
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has emphasized the need for the United Kingdom to adopt a bolder approach in strengthening its ties with the European Union. During a meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa on Sunday, while en route to Kyiv, Burnham expressed his belief that the upcoming UK-EU summit later this year presents a valuable opportunity for enhancing collaboration between the two entities.
This meeting marks Burnham's first visit to Ukraine since taking office as Prime Minister. His discussions with Costa focused on building upon the existing defense and security cooperation between the UK and its European allies. A spokesperson from Downing Street reported that Burnham articulated the importance of advancing the relationship across various sectors, stating, "Britain had to be bolder in terms of getting closer to the bloc."
Since the election of a Labour government in 2024, the UK has made attempts to improve its trading relations with the EU. However, progress has been described as slow, with both sides expressing frustrations regarding the expectations of the UK as a former EU member. The British government has acknowledged the challenges of navigating its new status outside the main EU institutions.
In addition to his discussions with Costa, Burnham also met with Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden during his trip. The two leaders explored various mechanisms for increasing defense spending, including the Canada-backed Defence, Security and Resilience Bank and the Multilateral Defence Mechanism initiated by the UK, the Netherlands, Finland, and Poland. Downing Street noted that the discussions included how these initiatives could complement one another, highlighting a collaborative approach to enhancing defense capabilities.
As the UK seeks to redefine its relationship with the EU, Burnham's calls for a more assertive stance reflect a broader desire to foster closer ties and address mutual concerns in defense and security.
