**Calm Restored After Buffer Zone Altercation Near Denia**
Calm has been reinstated in the buffer zone near Denia, a village located west of Nicosia, following a recent altercation involving Turkish forces and Greek Cypriot farmers. The United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (Unficyp) confirmed the resolution of the incident through spokesman Aleem Siddique on Wednesday.
According to Siddique, Unficyp personnel were promptly dispatched to the area to deescalate tensions and restore order after the altercation took place. Following their intervention, both parties agreed to retreat from the buffer zone, allowing for a return to a more stable environment. Siddique emphasized that Unficyp will continue to monitor the situation closely to maintain the status quo.

Just two weeks prior, Charalambos Alexandrou, the mukhtar of Denia, had expressed concerns regarding the visibility and presence of Unficyp in the region during a meeting with the force’s chief, Khassim Diagne. Alexandrou urged for increased patrols and a more active role in intervening during incidents in the buffer zone, suggesting that a more assertive presence could help manage tensions with Turkish forces.
While the village of Pyla has been the focal point of tension in the buffer zone in recent years, the section between Nicosia and Morphou, where Denia is situated, has also experienced its share of conflicts. Earlier this year, disagreements arose over the rights of Greek Cypriot farmers to access farmland south of Avlona, a village located in the northern part of the island. These disputes have become more frequent in recent months, highlighting ongoing challenges in the region.
In July, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres acknowledged these challenges, stating that Unficyp has developed an internal action plan aimed at addressing them in a sustainable and comprehensive manner. This plan reflects the UN's commitment to fostering peace and stability in the buffer zone.
A previous incident in April involved Turkish Cypriot police officers mistakenly believing that a Greek Cypriot farmer had crossed into northern territory. This misunderstanding led to an attempt to intercept the farmer until Unficyp peacekeepers intervened, clarifying the boundaries of the buffer zone and facilitating the farmer's safe return.
